    There are several types of art schools, each with varying degrees of quality, time requirements, degree options, and price ranges. Here is a quick summary of the kinds of art schools out there.

    Colleges and Universities

    Many state and private colleges and universities offer art degrees. While these schools offer the most in terms of community diversity, subject variety and extra-curricular activities, it is important to research the quality of their art department and art instructors. The quality level of the art departments at various schools varies A LOT. Colleges and universities allow you to minor in other subjects, such as business administration, communications, or marketing, which will be helpful additions to your art degree.

    Art Degree options:
    Undergraduate (Bachelor of Arts Degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree)
    Graduate (Master of Arts Degree, Master of Fine Arts Degree)

    4-Year Art-Focused Schools

    This is what most people associate with art school. Art-focused schools are very competitive and can be difficult to get accepted in. But, the level of instruction at these schools is usually among the best you can get. Of course, the price tag is usually at a matching level.

    Art Degree options:
    Undergraduate (Bachelor of Arts Degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree)
    Graduate (Master of Arts Degree, Master of Fine Arts Degree)

    Vocational Schools and Technical Schools

    Vo-Tech schools generally are only for one to two years, and offer very specialized courses and education paths. The range of quality between these schools can be extreme, so be sure to check out  both the curriculum and instructor staff. Depending on the course, Vocational Schools and Technical Schools can also be very expensive.

    Associate of Arts Degree
    Associate of Science Degree

    Community Colleges

    Community colleges are by far the most inexpensive option, and can be a great option for young students who wish to continue living at home, retired persons who want to take a few courses, or working moms who need to remain in their community. Community colleges offer basic-level or foundation art courses that every student will need. Graduating from a community college guarantees acceptance at most state colleges.

    Associate of Science Degree

    Art Academies and Art Workshops

    Art Academies usually offer a wide variety of different hands-on drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking, fine crafts and home decorating classes and workshops; for both the experienced and novice artist. Usually no previous art experience is necessary. Taught by local professional artists, art academies and workshops can provide you with a creative learning experience at a smaller price and shorter time commitment. Classes will vary in length from a one day workshops to months-long classes. This is a great way to get your feet wet.
